Attracting Birds, Butterflies, and other Pollinators

Attracting wildlife to your backyard depends on the type of habitat you have in place.  Habitat is a combination of food, water, shelter, and how the space is arranged, meaning it depends on the trees, shrubs, and other plants that you provide for wildlife.  Choose plants according to what wildlife you want to have visit your yard and what will thrive in the conditions that exist in the area.  Here are a few things that will help you create a pollinator-friendly landscape:

A lot of space is not necessary

If you have a small area that recieves at least five to six hours of sunlight a day, it is possible to have a successful container garden that will attract pollinators.

Selecting plants

When selecting plants, take into consideration the time and work you are willing to devote to your pollinator-friendly landscape.  If you plan on using a container, you can choose to use annual or perennials.  When using perennials, pick plants that have different blooming periods.  Planting plants directly in the yard has virtually no boundaries when it comes to creating a pollinator-friendly landscape.  The only thing we recommend is using native plants and trees as they will attract the most poillinators and are helpful to the environment.

Provide some source of water

Having a source of water will also help attract pollinators and may encourage them to consider your yard as a permanent home for the season.  Providing a water source is as simple as putting a bird bath or some type of fountain in your yard, as long as there is a space for the pollinator to land.

Installing a pollinator-friendly garden can be very easy depending on the size and types of plants and trees that are used.  We can help you design, or even install, a pollinator-friendly garden.
